Two Products, Two Lifespans

TempNumber.me sells numbers in two forms. A verification activation is a single number opened for a single service for the length of the SMS window. You select the service and country, the number is allocated, the code arrives, and the activation closes. It is priced per verification and suits the common case of one signup.

A rental keeps the same number on your account for a fixed period measured in days rather than minutes. During that period the number receives messages from any sender, not only the one service, and you can use it for a second code, a login confirmation, or a follow-up message from the platform. The retention period and the price are displayed at selection, and the private tier described on /pricing carries a longer retention period than the shared one.

The two products share the same underlying numbers and the same carrier ranges. The difference is purely how long the number stays yours.

Verification Activations: The SMS Window

An activation opens when you select the number and stays open for the SMS window, which is typically 10 to 20 minutes depending on the service and country. That is enough for the platform to send a code, for a normal delay of a few minutes, and for one retry. It is not designed to cover a signup you start, leave, and come back to an hour later.

Once the code arrives and you have read it, the activation is complete. If the window closes with nothing received, the activation ends and the case can be raised with support@tempnumber.me for individual review. Either way, the number is released back to the pool when the window closes.

The practical consequence is that the platform you verified now has a number on file that you can no longer read messages on. For most signups that is fine. For a handful of platforms it is not, and those are covered below.

Rentals: A Set Number of Days

A rental holds the number for the number of days shown at selection. Throughout that period the number appears in your dashboard, receives messages from any sender, and cannot be selected by another user. This is the right product when a platform sends more than one code, when you expect a login confirmation a day or two after signup, or when you want time to move the account to a persistent number.

Rentals do not renew automatically, and the number does not stay reserved after the last day. If you need the number for longer, extend it before it expires; once it has returned to the pool, it may already have been allocated elsewhere and cannot be recovered.

A rental is still temporary. It is a longer window, not a permanent line, and the guidance about what to leave attached to the number applies to rentals as much as to activations.

What Happens at Expiry

At expiry the number is released from your account and returns to the pool. Messages sent to it after that point do not reach you. After a cooling period the number can be allocated to another user, who will then receive whatever arrives on it, including any codes sent by platforms where the number is still on file.

This is normal for every temp number provider and is the reason a temp number is described as being for verification rather than for account recovery. The number has done its job at the moment the code arrived; the platform's record of the number outlives your access to it.

It also means the number cannot be reserved after the fact. There is no way to reclaim a specific number once it has expired, so any migration to a persistent number has to happen while the rental is still running.

What This Means for Account Setup

How much expiry matters depends on how the platform uses the number after signup. The list below covers the services where it matters most.

  • WhatsApp: the number is the account identity. WhatsApp may re-verify by SMS after long inactivity, a reinstall, or a device change. Once the temp number has expired, that re-verification cannot be completed. Use Change Number in WhatsApp settings to move the account to a persistent number before the rental ends, or accept that the account lives on the current phone only.
  • Telegram: the account keeps working on logged-in devices, and new-device logins are confirmed through the app on an existing session. If every session is lost, Telegram sends an SMS to the number, so keep at least one device logged in and set a two-step verification password with a recovery email.
  • Google: the phone is used for 2-Step Verification and recovery. Add an authenticator app and backup codes, then remove the temp number from the recovery settings before it expires.
  • Steam, Discord, Instagram, Twitter: the number is mostly a signup gate and a recovery option. Remove it from the account or replace it with a persistent number, and enable an authenticator app where the platform offers one.
  • Dating apps: the number is a signup gate. Link an Apple or Facebook login as a second recovery path if the app offers it.

Accounts You Should Never Leave on a Temp Number

Any account that holds money or can spend it should not remain tied to a temp number past the rental. Banks, Revolut, Wise, PayPal, crypto exchanges, and payment apps send login and transaction codes by SMS, and an expired number that has been reassigned puts those codes in front of whoever holds it next. A temp number is a reasonable way to get through their signup SMS; it is not a reasonable place to leave the account.

The same applies to the email account that everything else recovers through. If a Gmail or Outlook account uses the temp number as its only recovery method, losing the number can lock you out of every service that resets through that inbox.

The rule is short: verify with the temp number, then change the number on the account to one you will still have next year, and do it before the rental expires. If the account cannot be moved, treat it as disposable and do not put anything in it that you would mind losing.

Choosing the Right Duration

For a single signup where you expect one code and nothing more, an activation is enough. This covers most social media, forums, e-commerce, and app signups. Pick a private number for strict platforms and a shared one where the platform is relaxed and the account is low-stakes.

For a platform that sends a second code shortly after signup, such as a login confirmation on a new device or a card activation, take a rental. The extra days give you room to complete the setup and to move the account to a persistent number without racing a 20-minute window.

For anything you want to keep long-term, take a rental long enough to finish the migration to a persistent number, and use the rental days to do exactly that. The temp number gets you in the door; the persistent number is what keeps the account yours.

Conclusion

A verification activation on TempNumber.me lasts the SMS window of roughly 10 to 20 minutes; a rental lasts the number of days shown when you select it; and at expiry the number returns to the pool and can be reassigned. Use the number for the signup, then either move the account to a persistent number before the rental ends or treat the account as disposable. WhatsApp, Telegram, Google, and anything involving money are the cases where that decision matters most, and none of them should be left on a number you no longer control.
