What KakaoTalk Accepts at Signup

KakaoTalk is the default messenger in South Korea, used by roughly 48 million people there, and it is also how Korean companies, hotels, tutors, and customer service desks reach people abroad. Signup asks for a phone number, sends a 4 to 6 digit SMS code, and then asks for a name and optional email. The international app accepts numbers from most countries, including the US (+1), UK (+44), Philippines (+63), Indonesia (+62), and Japan (+81).

A Korean number is not required for the chat features. Messaging, group chats, voice and video calls, open chats, emoticons, and following Kakao Channels all work on a foreign-number account. Friend discovery by phone number works against whatever number you registered, so a friend in Seoul who saved your temp number will find you, and one who saved your real number will not.

Kakao does check that the number is a mobile range and it will reject obvious VoIP allocations. TempNumber.me numbers sit on carrier mobile ranges, which is why they pass where a Google Voice or Skype number fails.

What Needs a Real Korean Number and ID

Korea runs one of the strictest identity systems attached to phone numbers anywhere. A Korean mobile contract requires a resident registration number or an alien registration card, and services use that link, through a process called 본인인증 (self-certification via carrier), to prove identity. A temp +82 number is not attached to your ID, so anything that triggers carrier certification stops there.

The features behind that wall: KakaoPay wallet activation, sending money, KakaoPay payments in shops and online, Kakao certified ID (카카오 인증서) used for government and banking logins, adult-verified content, KakaoTalk Channel creation for businesses that require a Korean business registration, and Kakao T taxi payments linked to a Korean card. Some Korean online shops and ticketing sites that log in through Kakao also run their own certification step.

If you need any of those, the answer is a Korean SIM in your own name, obtained in Korea with a passport or ARC. A temp number, from TempNumber.me or anyone else, will not do it, and a service that claims otherwise is selling something that will fail at the certification screen.

Which Country to Pick: Why Not +82

Korean carriers (SK Telecom, KT, LG U+) apply heavy filtering to application-to-person SMS, especially international traffic. Kakao sends its verification code through its own Korean infrastructure, which delivers well to Korean handsets, but rented +82 numbers on the market are a thin pool, expensive, and more likely to have been used on Kakao before. In our experience a +82 number is the worst-value choice for a Kakao signup that does not need Korean identity, because the account gains nothing from the country code.

For a chat-only account, pick a country with reliable delivery and a low price: the Philippines (+63), Indonesia (+62), the United Kingdom (+44), or the United States (+1) all register cleanly. The only visible difference is the country code your Korean contacts see next to your name, and nobody in a group chat cares.

Pick +82 only when a Korean-facing platform that logs in through Kakao checks the country code without running full certification, which is rare, or when a Korean contact insists on a local number to save you. The South Korea page at /south-korea-phone-number lists what is available and the price, which is higher than the Southeast Asian options.

Step-by-Step: Verifying KakaoTalk with a Temp Number

The activation window on TempNumber.me is 10 to 20 minutes, which is plenty for a Kakao signup if you have the app installed and the country selector ready before you rent the number.

  • Install KakaoTalk from the App Store or Google Play and open it to the signup screen. Do not enter a number yet.
  • On TempNumber.me, choose KakaoTalk as the service and the country you settled on above. Select a private number.
  • Back in Kakao, tap the country field, choose the matching country, and enter the number without the leading zero. Kakao formats it as E.164 for you.
  • Tap Next. Kakao sends the code; it usually shows in the TempNumber.me dashboard within 5 to 60 seconds.
  • Type the code into Kakao before the in-app timer runs out. Kakao allows a resend after about 60 seconds if the first attempt fails.
  • Set your name, skip or add an email, and choose whether to allow friend discovery by phone. Turn it off if you would rather people add you by Kakao ID.
  • Go to Settings, Kakao Account, and add an email address plus a password. This is what lets you log in on a new device once the temp number has expired.

If the Code Is Delayed

Kakao codes are normally fast. When one is slow, the sequence is: wait the full 60-second resend timer, then request once more. Do not tap resend repeatedly; Kakao counts requests and locks the number for hours after a handful of attempts. If nothing has arrived within the activation window, cancel the activation in the dashboard, which triggers a credit review, and try a number from a different country rather than the same range again.

Two things cause most Kakao delays. The first is carrier filtering in the destination country, which is why South Korea, Russia, and China are poor choices for receiving international OTPs of any kind. The second is a number that has been used on Kakao previously; Kakao remembers numbers and applies extra checks to repeats. A private TempNumber.me number has not been advertised on a public inbox site, so the repeat-use problem is far less common than with a shared number.

Credits on a failed activation are handled case by case. Write to support@tempnumber.me with the number, the service, and the time of the attempt.

Keeping the Account After the Number Expires

KakaoTalk is designed around one device and one number, and it will ask for phone re-verification when you install it on a new phone. If the temp number is gone by then, the email-and-password Kakao Account is the recovery route, so set it up during the first session while the number still works. Kakao will also accept a new phone number at that point, which can be another temp number or a real one.

Expect to lose chat history on a device change unless you turn on Kakao's chat backup (Settings, Chats, Backup and Restore), which stores an encrypted backup tied to the account rather than the number. Friends and channels survive because they are attached to the Kakao Account.

For a long-running secondary account, a rental is cheaper than repeated activations and keeps the same number for re-verification. For a once-off account to talk to a Korean landlord or a language tutor, a single activation is enough.

KakaoTalk Compared with LINE and WeChat

The three East Asian messengers treat foreign numbers differently. LINE is strict about country: it locks the account to the registration country for stickers, LINE Pay, and some official accounts, so the number choice matters more; see /blog/temp-number-for-line. WeChat is strict about the account itself: new registrations frequently require an existing user to scan a QR code, and a temp number alone often will not finish the flow; see /blog/temp-number-for-wechat.

KakaoTalk is the most relaxed of the three for chat, and the strictest for anything touching money or identity, because Korea's certification system does the gatekeeping rather than the app. That makes the Kakao decision easy: any reliable country for chat, a real Korean SIM for everything else.

Conclusion

A TempNumber.me number from the Philippines, Indonesia, the UK, or the US registers a KakaoTalk account in a few minutes and gives you every chat feature the app has. It will not activate KakaoPay, certified ID, or anything else that runs Korean carrier certification, and a rented +82 number will not either. Set an email and password on the Kakao Account before the activation window closes and the account survives the number.
