Where Roblox Asks for a Phone Number

Roblox does not require a phone at signup. It asks for one in four places: when you turn on two-step verification by SMS, when it wants to confirm an account's age for voice chat and 17+ experiences (where the phone is one of the signals alongside ID verification), when you apply to sell UGC items or join the Creator Marketplace, and when an account is flagged and Roblox wants a reachable contact before restoring it. Adding a phone also becomes a recovery option in Settings, Account Info.

Roblox sends a 6-digit code and is strict about the number's range. It rejects VoIP numbers (Google Voice, TextNow, Skype, most app-based second lines) and blocks many ranges it has learned are disposable, which includes most of the numbers listed on public shared inbox sites. A number that has already been attached to another Roblox account is refused outright, since Roblox allows one account per phone number for verification purposes.

TempNumber.me numbers sit on carrier mobile ranges and are private for the activation window, so they pass the VoIP check and have not been attached to someone else's Roblox account earlier that day. That is the difference between a code that arrives and a "phone number cannot be used" error.

Where Epic Games Asks for a Phone Number

Epic Games accounts are email-first. The phone number appears when you enable two-factor authentication and pick SMS instead of an authenticator app or email, and Epic pushes 2FA hard: it is required for Fortnite competitive modes and tournaments, for gifting items in Fortnite, for the Support-A-Creator program, and for claiming certain promotional items. Epic also sends an SMS code at login from a new device if SMS is the active 2FA method.

Epic accepts numbers from most countries and is less aggressive than Roblox about VoIP ranges, though Google Voice and similar numbers are rejected often enough not to rely on them. One number can be attached to one Epic account. The code is 6 digits and arrives within seconds on a mobile range.

The sensible configuration for Epic is an authenticator app (Google Authenticator, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator) as the 2FA method, with email as the backup, and no phone on the account at all. Use a temp number only if you need SMS specifically, for example to satisfy a one-time prompt, and then switch.

PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo

All three console networks are email-first and none requires a phone at signup. Sony's PlayStation Network offers SMS 2FA and an authenticator app; it prompts for a phone when you turn on 2-step verification and sometimes on a new console login. Xbox runs on a Microsoft account, which asks for a phone or alternate email as a security contact and will nudge you to add one on new devices; the Microsoft Authenticator app replaces the need for it. Nintendo Account uses email plus an authenticator app for 2-step verification and does not use SMS codes at all, though it may ask for a phone as a recovery contact.

A temp number covers the PlayStation and Microsoft prompts if you want to clear them without your personal number, but all three are better served by an authenticator app, and Nintendo gives you no other choice. Our Microsoft account guide at /blog/temp-number-for-microsoft-outlook covers the Xbox side in more detail. For the parallel case of Steam, which does require a phone for Steam Guard mobile and for trading, see /blog/temp-number-for-steam.

Step-by-Step: Passing the Phone Prompt

The activation window on TempNumber.me is 10 to 20 minutes. Have the account open at the phone-number screen before you rent the number.

  • Open the relevant screen: Roblox Settings, Account Info, Add Phone; Epic Account, Password and Security, Two-Factor Authentication, SMS; PlayStation Account, Security, 2-Step Verification.
  • On TempNumber.me, select Roblox, Epic Games, or Other for the console networks, choose a country, and take a private number. The US (+1) and UK (+44) have the highest acceptance on Roblox; Epic is relaxed about country.
  • Enter the number with the matching country selected and request the code.
  • Read the 6-digit code in the dashboard and enter it. Roblox and Epic both give you a few minutes and a resend after 60 seconds.
  • Complete whatever the prompt was gating: the age check, the UGC application, the tournament registration, the new-device login.
  • Before the window closes, switch the account's 2FA to an authenticator app and remove the phone, or replace it with a number you keep. Roblox lets you remove the phone from Account Info; Epic lets you change the 2FA method on the same screen.

Why a Temp Number Must Not Stay as Your 2FA

A temp number lasts minutes on an activation and days or weeks on a rental. Roblox, Epic, and PlayStation will send a login code to that number the next time they see an unfamiliar device, an unfamiliar IP, or a password change, and by then the number belongs to nobody. Roblox account recovery without access to the 2FA phone requires a support ticket with proof of ownership, and Roblox is known for rejecting those when the account has little purchase history. Epic's recovery process is similar and can take days.

The pattern that works: use the temp number to pass the one-time gate, then move the second factor to an authenticator app in the same session. Roblox supports authenticator apps under Settings, Security, Authenticator App, and Epic prefers them. Keep the backup codes both services generate. The number can then expire without consequence. The general approach is covered at /blog/two-factor-authentication-without-phone.

If you do want SMS as a backup factor, rent the number for the life of the account rather than taking a single activation, and put a reminder in your calendar before the rental ends.

What a Temp Number Will Not Do

None of these platforms use the phone number alone to prove age. Roblox's age verification for voice chat and 17+ content asks for a government ID scanned through Persona, and the phone is at most a supporting signal. Epic's Cabined Accounts for under-13 players lift when a parent verifies through a card or ID. PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo age-gate through the account's date of birth and parental controls. A temp number changes none of that.

A temp number also does not lift an account ban, does not get around Roblox's one-account-per-number rule for a number that has already been used, and does not make a VoIP number acceptable, because it is not one. If a code does not arrive inside the window, cancel the activation and try another country; credits are reviewed case by case via support@tempnumber.me.

Discord and the Rest of the Gaming Stack

Most players running Roblox or Fortnite also run Discord, which has the most aggressive phone verification of the group: many servers require a verified phone to post, Discord rejects VoIP ranges, and it allows one account per number. The same private-mobile-range logic applies, and the Discord walkthrough is at /blog/temp-number-for-discord with the service page at /discord-phone-number.

Across all of them the rule is the same: a private number on a carrier range passes the check, a public inbox number is usually already blocked, and the account's long-term second factor should live in an authenticator app rather than on any phone number you do not own.

Conclusion

A private TempNumber.me number on a mobile range passes the phone prompts on Roblox, Epic Games, PlayStation, and Xbox, and Roblox in particular rejects the VoIP and shared-inbox numbers most people try first. Use it for the one-time gate, then move two-factor authentication to an authenticator app in the same session, and the account is no longer tied to a number that will expire.
