How Signal and Viber Use the Phone Number

Signal registers the device against a phone number and sends a verification code by SMS, with an automated voice call as a fallback. Since 2024, Signal lets you set a username and hide your phone number from everyone, so people you message see only the username. The number is still the account key: it is what you enter to re-register on a new phone, and it is what Signal's registration lock protects.

Viber uses the number as both identity and display. Contacts who have your number in their address book see you in Viber automatically, and there is no username alternative. Viber verifies by SMS first and falls back to a voice call reading out the code if the SMS is not confirmed within a couple of minutes. Step-by-Step: Registering Signal with a Temp Number

The registration itself takes two minutes. The security settings afterwards take three more and are not optional if you want to keep the account.

• In TempNumber.me, select Signal as the service and a country from the list above. Copy the number.
• Install Signal, tap Continue, and enter the temp number with the country code. Choose to receive the code by SMS.

Re-Verification and Recovery: What to Expect

Signal only asks you to verify the number again when you re-register, which happens on a new phone, after a reinstall, or after restoring from backup on Android. With Registration Lock on and the PIN known, re-registration on a number you no longer control is not possible for you either, because Signal still sends an SMS to the number as the first step. In practice, this means a Signal account on a temp number lives on your current phone and its linked devices, and when that phone is gone, the account is gone. Set the PIN and lock anyway: they stop anyone else from claiming the number and impersonating you.

Viber re-verifies more often. A reinstall, a device change, a long period offline, or an unusual login can trigger a fresh code to the registered number. If the temp number has expired, the account cannot pass that check. Viber's Change Phone Number feature is the way out: migrate to a permanent number while the temp number still works, and the account carries over with contacts and, if backup is enabled, history.

Neither app offers recovery through email or support without access to the number. Plan on that from the start. For a working account, a project contact, or a short-lived identity, the temp number is exactly right. For an account that must last for years, register with the temp number, then move it to a permanent number you control.

How This Compares with WhatsApp and Telegram
