Temporary Phone Number for PayPal Verification

Receive the PayPal SMS code on a real mobile-carrier number that passes PayPal's VoIP check — private numbers with rental periods long enough to survive the login and payout re-checks that follow.

What This Page Is For

This page covers one use case: receiving the 6-digit SMS code PayPal sends when it asks you to confirm a mobile number. That prompt appears at sign-up, when you add a bank account or card, when you log in from a new device, and when PayPal runs a security review on an existing account. A temporary number from TempNumber.me receives that code so you do not have to attach your personal number to the account.

It is not about opening PayPal accounts in countries you do not live in, running multiple accounts to get around a limitation, or replacing PayPal's identity and bank verification. A phone number clears the SMS step and nothing else. The sections on retention and account lockout below matter more on PayPal than on any social platform, so read them before you pick a number.

PayPal Binds the Number to the Account

On Telegram or Discord, the phone number is a one-time gate. On PayPal it is a persistent second factor. Once confirmed, the number is stored under Settings, Security, and PayPal sends codes to it again without warning in these situations:

  • Login from a new device or browser— PayPal's risk engine prompts for an SMS code whenever the device fingerprint or IP does not match recent history. Clearing cookies counts as a new device.
  • Bank, card, and payout changes— Linking a new bank account, changing the withdrawal destination, or editing a card triggers an SMS confirmation on most accounts.
  • Sending money above a threshold— Larger or unusual transfers prompt a code before the payment goes out.
  • Security reviews and limitations— When PayPal limits an account, the resolution flow often starts with an SMS code to the number on file before asking for documents.

This is why the shared-versus-private decision below is not a cost question on PayPal. A number that lapses before you have set up other second factors can lock the account with money in it. PayPal's recovery process for a lost number requires photo ID and proof of address and can take weeks.

Why PayPal Rejects Most Virtual Numbers

PayPal runs a number-type lookup before sending any code. Numbers in ranges assigned to VoIP operators such as Google Voice, TextNow, Skype, Hushed, and Burner return “This phone number is not supported” or fail silently, with no code arriving. Retrying does not help because the refusal happens at the lookup stage, before any SMS is sent. PayPal has enforced this more strictly than Meta since 2023, and landline numbers are also refused because they cannot receive SMS.

PayPal also checks that the number's country matches the account's country. A UK account will not accept a +49 number, and on an existing account a mismatch can trigger a limitation rather than a plain error. Pick the country of the number to match the country you registered the PayPal account in.

TempNumber.me numbers come from real mobile-operator ranges in 198 countries. The lookup sees the same carrier it would see on a physical SIM, and the code arrives by SMS, usually within 15-45 seconds.

Which Countries Pass PayPal's Carrier Check Reliably

Numbers from 198 countries are available. For PayPal specifically, these have consistent SMS delivery and unambiguous carrier lookups. Each is also a country where PayPal has operated for over 15 years, so the delivery paths are well tested:

  • UK (+44)— EE, O2, Vodafone UK, and Three mobile ranges starting +44 7. PayPal UK is a licensed e-money institution and one of the highest-volume PayPal markets outside the US.
  • Germany (+49)— Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone DE, and O2 Germany ranges starting +49 15, 16, or 17. Germany is PayPal's largest European market and the number-type lookup on German carrier ranges is precise.
  • Netherlands (+31)— KPN, Odido, and Vodafone NL ranges starting +31 6. PayPal's European entity, PayPal (Europe) S.a r.l. et Cie, serves Dutch accounts, and iDEAL-linked accounts are common.
  • Spain (+34)— Movistar, Orange, and Vodafone Spain ranges starting +34 6 or 7. Reliable delivery and a large Wallapop and Vinted seller base that pays out through PayPal.
  • US (+1)— AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon mobile ranges. The largest PayPal market by account count. Use a genuine mobile range; US VoIP ranges are the ones PayPal refuses most aggressively.

Match the number to the account's registered country. If you are opening a new account, register it in the country you actually live and bank in and pick a number from that country. PayPal will later ask for a bank account or card from the same country, and a number in a different country will not help at that step.

Shared vs Private Numbers for PayPal

TempNumber.me offers two tiers. On most services the choice comes down to price. On PayPal it comes down to whether you keep access to the account:

  • Shared numbers— Publicly listed. Any TempNumber.me user can see incoming SMS on these numbers while they are active, so the code is visible to anyone watching at that moment, and the number returns to the pool shortly after. Other users may already have verified PayPal accounts on it, and PayPal refuses numbers already attached to too many accounts. Acceptable only for a throwaway account with no balance and no linked bank.
  • Premium private numbers— Exclusively yours for the rental period. No other user sees the code, the number has not been cycled through repeated PayPal sign-ups, and the longer rental gives you time to set up an authenticator app, confirm your email, and complete bank or card verification while PayPal can still reach the number. This is the tier to use for any PayPal account you intend to keep money in or receive payouts to. The trade-offs are covered in shared vs private numbers.

How to Verify PayPal with a Temporary Number

  1. Select the account's country and a private number. Go to TempNumber.me — PayPal numbers, choose the country your PayPal account is registered in, and pick a premium private number with the longest rental you can. Copy the number.
  2. Enter it in PayPal.In the sign-up form or under Settings, Phone, select the matching country code and type the number. Choose “Text me a code” if PayPal offers a choice; temporary numbers do not receive voice calls.
  3. Receive the code live.Return to TempNumber.me. The 6-digit code appears on the number's page. Enter it in PayPal before it expires.
  4. Confirm your email the same session. PayPal sends a confirmation link to the email on the account. Click it now. An unconfirmed email cannot be used for account recovery.
  5. Add an authenticator app. Under Settings, Security, 2-step verification, choose an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator or Authy instead of SMS. Once this is active, PayPal accepts app codes at login and the number is no longer the only way in.
  6. Finish identity and bank verification while the number is live. Link a bank account or card from the same country and complete any ID request PayPal raises. The confirmation SMS for those steps goes to the temporary number, so do them before the rental ends.

Limits You Should Know Before Verifying

A phone number clears the SMS step only. Full PayPal account use, including receiving payments, withdrawing to a bank, and lifting the initial receiving limit, requires identity verification and a confirmed bank account or card in the account's country. PayPal enforces this under EU anti-money-laundering rules and US Know Your Customer requirements. A temporary number does not replace any of it.

Account lockout is the other limit. PayPal re-verifies by SMS at new-device login and on payout changes. If the temporary number has lapsed and there is no authenticator app or confirmed email on file, the account is locked until PayPal's document-based recovery completes. Set up the other factors on the day you verify.

If a code does not arrive, credit review is case-by-case. Contact support@tempnumber.me with the number and the time of the attempt. TempNumber.me is not for opening accounts in a country you do not reside in, for getting around a PayPal limitation, or for running multiple accounts. PayPal links accounts by device, bank details, and identity documents, and numbers used that way are refused quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a virtual number for PayPal verification?

Yes, if the number sits in a real mobile-carrier range. PayPal runs a number-type lookup before sending the 6-digit SMS code and refuses VoIP ranges such as Google Voice, TextNow, and Skype. TempNumber.me numbers come from mobile-operator ranges, so the lookup sees a carrier like EE, Deutsche Telekom, KPN, Movistar, or T-Mobile US and the code arrives by SMS. Pick a country that matches the PayPal account's country.

Should I use a shared or a private number for PayPal?

Private. PayPal binds the number to the account and sends codes to it again at new-device login, on bank and payout changes, and during security reviews. A shared number returns to the pool within minutes and the code is visible to other users while active. A premium private number is yours for the rental period, which gives you time to add an authenticator app and confirm your email so the account no longer depends on the number.

Which countries pass PayPal SMS verification most reliably?

UK (+44), Germany (+49), Netherlands (+31), Spain (+34), and US (+1) mobile ranges from the major carriers in each country. These are PayPal's largest and longest-established markets, and the number-type lookup on their carrier ranges is unambiguous. The number's country must match the account's registered country; PayPal rejects a +49 number on a UK account, and a mismatch on an existing account can trigger a limitation.

What happens to my PayPal account when the temporary number expires?

If the number is the only second factor, you lose access the next time PayPal asks for an SMS code, which happens at new-device login and on payout or bank changes. Recovery requires identity documents and can take weeks. Avoid this by adding an authenticator app, confirming your email, and, if you want a permanent number on file, replacing the temporary one before the rental ends. Do it the day you verify.
