US Virtual Number for SMS Verification (+1)

A +1 number from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon ranges for people outside the United States who need to pass the phone step on a US-only service. Not a VoIP number. Priced per activation.

A US Virtual Number That Is Not VoIP

TempNumber.me provides US virtual numbers with a +1 prefix drawn from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon mobile ranges. There is no SIM card and no handset. Incoming SMS is captured on carrier infrastructure and displayed on the number page in your browser, from any country, within 15-45 seconds. Pricing is credit-based and per activation, with no subscription. The service is built for non-US residents who need to register on a service that only accepts a US phone number.

The word “virtual” causes confusion here. Google Voice, TextNow, Hushed, Burner, and Sideline also call their numbers virtual, and all of them issue from VoIP ranges registered to internet telephony providers such as Bandwidth, Twilio, and Inteliquent. When a US platform runs a carrier lookup on one of those numbers, the line type comes back as VoIP and the code is never sent. TempNumber.me numbers return mobile in the same lookup because the range belongs to a mobile network operator. That distinction is the whole reason to use this service instead of a VoIP app, and it is covered in depth on the non-VoIP phone number page.

US-Only Services and What Each One Checks

A +1 number is the entry ticket for these platforms, but several of them run additional checks after the SMS. The table below is what to expect from outside the United States.

  • OpenAI and ChatGPT— Phone verification is required at account creation and rejects VoIP ranges outright. One number can verify a limited count of OpenAI accounts, so a shared number that other customers have already used on OpenAI may return “this phone number has been used too many times”. A premium private number avoids that. OpenAI also checks your IP against its supported-countries list. Full walkthrough: temp number for ChatGPT and OpenAI.
  • Craigslist— Requires a phone-verified account to post in most categories, and its number-reuse tracking is aggressive. Shared +1 numbers are frequently refused. Use a private number.
  • Nextdoor— Accepts the +1 number for SMS, then requires a US street address, verified by postcard, credit card billing address, or a neighbour invitation. The number gets you past step one only.
  • Hulu, Peacock, Max— The phone step is the easy part. All three block non-US IP addresses at playback and require a US-issued payment method or gift card. Plan for the IP and payment layers separately.
  • US Amazon (amazon.com)— Accepts a +1 number for account creation and two-step verification. Amazon does not restrict account creation by IP, but Prime Video and some digital content are region-locked by IP and billing address.
  • Discord servers with phone verification— Servers set to the highest verification level require a phone-verified account. Discord refuses VoIP ranges and ties one number to one account at a time. A carrier-range +1 number passes; a Google Voice number does not.
  • Venmo, Cash App, Zelle— See the next section. The SMS step passes; the identity step does not, unless you already hold US identity documents.

What a US Virtual Number Does Not Do

Two limits worth stating plainly, because search results for this term tend to skip them.

First, a US virtual number does not open a US financial account from abroad. Venmo, Cash App, Zelle, Robinhood, and Coinbase are regulated as money transmitters or broker-dealers and must run Know Your Customer checks. That means a Social Security Number or ITIN, a US residential address, a US bank account or debit card, and usually a government ID scan matched to a selfie. The +1 number satisfies the phone field. It does not supply any of the rest, and TempNumber.me is not a route around those requirements. If you already meet them and only lack a US mobile number to receive the code, the number does that job.

Second, the number does not change where you are. Your IP address, browser language, device locale, app store region, and card-issuing country all stay the same. A service that checks only the phone number treats you as a US user. A service that also checks IP (OpenAI, Hulu, Peacock, Max, US Apple ID region changes) will see a non-US connection and act on it. A US VPN or residential proxy handles the IP layer; it is a separate tool from the number, and some services detect data-centre VPN ranges too. Neither tool makes you a US resident in any legal sense.

Shared or Private for US-Only Sign-Ups

The US country page lists both number types. The right choice depends on how hard the target platform tracks reuse.

  • Shared +1 numbers— Listed publicly; other customers may have verified the same service on that number before. Lower cost per activation. Fine for US Amazon, DoorDash, Instacart, Poshmark, OfferUp, and most retail or delivery sign-ups, which send the code without a reuse check.
  • Premium private +1 numbers— Assigned to you alone for the rental period. Nobody else sees the inbox, and the number has not been cycled through prior sign-ups on the same platform. Use these for OpenAI, Craigslist, Discord, Tinder, and any account you intend to keep. The number returns to the pool when the rental ends, so switch the account to a recovery email or authenticator app before then.

How to Get a US Virtual Number

  1. Create an account and add credit. Shared and premium private rates are on the pricing page.
  2. Open the United States page. Go to TempNumber.me — United States and pick shared or private based on the section above.
  3. Enter the number in the sign-up form. US numbers are ten digits after the +1: a three-digit area code followed by seven digits. Most US forms omit the +1 and expect the ten digits, so select United States in the country dropdown if there is one and paste the number without the prefix.
  4. Read the code on the number page. It arrives within 15-45 seconds. Enter it on the service.
  5. Detach the account from the number. Add a recovery email or app-based two-step verification so the account survives after the rental ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a US virtual number the same as a Google Voice or TextNow number?

No. Google Voice, TextNow, Hushed, and Burner issue from VoIP ranges registered to providers such as Bandwidth and Twilio, and a carrier lookup returns VoIP. WhatsApp, Google, OpenAI, Venmo, Cash App, Discord, and Tinder refuse those. TempNumber.me US virtual numbers come from AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon mobile ranges, so the lookup returns mobile. The number is virtual in the sense that there is no SIM or handset; the range is a carrier range. The mechanics are in why VoIP numbers get rejected.

Can I open a Venmo or Cash App account from abroad with a US virtual number?

The number passes the SMS step, and that is where its role ends. Venmo and Cash App are US money transmitters and must verify identity: SSN or ITIN, a US residential address, a US bank account or debit card, and often an ID scan. A temporary US number supplies none of those and does not make you a US resident. Use it for the phone step if you already meet the other requirements.

Does a US virtual number change my IP address or location?

No. The number handles SMS only. Your IP, browser locale, app store region, and card country are unchanged. Hulu, Peacock, and Max block non-US IPs at playback regardless of phone number; OpenAI checks IP against its supported-countries list; Nextdoor requires a US street address. For a service that checks both, the number covers the phone layer and a US VPN or proxy is a separate tool for the IP layer.

Which US-only services accept a TempNumber.me US virtual number?

OpenAI and ChatGPT, Craigslist, Nextdoor, Hulu, US Amazon, phone-verified Discord servers, Robinhood, Poshmark, OfferUp, DoorDash, and Instacart all send codes to +1 mobile-range numbers and accept them at the SMS step. For Craigslist, OpenAI, and Discord, a premium private number is more reliable than a shared one because those platforms track how many accounts a number has already verified.
