Virtual SMS Number: Receive Verification Codes Online
A receive-only number from a real mobile-carrier range in one of 198 countries. The verification code lands on a web page in 15-45 seconds. Priced per activation.
What a Virtual SMS Number Is
A virtual SMS number is a phone number that exists to receive text messages and nothing else. It is not attached to a SIM card or a handset. Incoming SMS is captured on carrier infrastructure the provider operates and shown to you in a browser. It does not make calls, take calls, or send messages. Its job is to be typed into a sign-up form so the one-time code arrives somewhere you can read it.
TempNumber.me provides virtual SMS numbers from 198 countries. Numbers come from ranges owned by national mobile carriers, not from VoIP blocks, which is what lets them pass the carrier lookup WhatsApp, Telegram, Google, and most banks run before sending a code. You create an account, add credit, pick a country, select a number, and read the code on the number page. There is no SIM, no monthly line, and no subscription. The broader category, including numbers that can call, is covered on the virtual phone number page.
Receive-Only: What That Means in Practice
- Inbound SMS only. The number accepts text messages. It does not send them. If a service asks you to text a keyword to a short code, this number cannot do that.
- No voice.Calls to the number are not connected. When a sign-up form offers “call me with the code” as an alternative, pick the SMS option.
- Read in the browser. Messages appear on the number page. Nothing is forwarded to your own phone, so your personal mobile is never part of the flow.
- Time-limited. Shared numbers rotate through the public pool. Premium private numbers are yours for the rental period, then return to the pool. Nobody keeps a number indefinitely.
Shared vs Private Virtual SMS Numbers
- Shared numbers— Listed on the country page for anyone to use. Every incoming SMS is visible to any TempNumber.me user viewing that number, and other customers may have registered the same service on it before you. Lower cost per activation. Right for a throwaway account where you act the moment the code arrives.
- Premium private numbers— Assigned to you alone for the rental period. Nobody else sees the code. The number has not been cycled through repeated sign-ups on the same service, so acceptance is higher. Right for a WhatsApp business profile, a second Google account, or any account you intend to keep for a while. Even so, the number returns to the pool when the rental ends, and the account must not depend on it after that.
Why Twilio and Vonage Do Not Cover This
People who search for a virtual number for SMS often land on Twilio, Vonage, Plivo, or MessageBird first. Those are business SMS APIs. They rent numbers to companies for sending order updates, appointment reminders, and support replies at scale. They are the wrong tool for receiving a verification code, for two reasons.
First, their acceptable use policies exclude it. Twilio and Vonage both prohibit using their numbers to receive OTP codes for third-party account creation, and accounts that do so get flagged and closed. Second, their numbers sit in VoIP ranges. WhatsApp, Telegram, Google, PayPal, and Revolut look up the carrier behind a number before sending anything, and a number that resolves to a VoIP provider is refused. The lookup is explained in why VoIP numbers get rejected.
That gap, receiving one verification SMS on a number that passes the carrier check, is what TempNumber.me is built for. Numbers come from ranges belonging to EE and O2 in the UK, T-Mobile and AT&T in the US, KPN in the Netherlands, Orange Polska in Poland, and Telkomsel in Indonesia. You pay for the activation, not a developer account, a monthly number rental, or a per-message fee. How the receiving side works end to end is on the receive SMS online page, and the purchasing model is on the SMS verification service page.
How to Receive a Verification Code on a Virtual SMS Number
- Create an account and add credit. Pricing is per activation. Shared numbers cost less; premium private numbers cost more and are exclusively yours for the rental period. Current rates are on the pricing page.
- Choose a country. Open the country list. For a service that does not check residency, US (+1), UK (+44), Netherlands (+31), Poland (+48), and Indonesia (+62) verify most reliably. For a service that expects a local number, pick that country.
- Select a number and enter it in the form. Copy the number, set the matching country code in the sign-up field, and request the SMS.
- Read the code on the number page. It appears in the browser within 15-45 seconds. Enter it to finish verification.
- Detach the account from the number. Add a password, recovery email, or app-based two-step verification. Which services need this most is covered on the phone number for verification page.
Services You Can Verify with a Virtual SMS Number
Each service has its own carrier check, country preferences, and quirks. The pages below cover them one by one.
- WhatsApp— One account per number. Refuses Google Voice and most VoIP ranges. Carrier-range numbers from the US, UK, Netherlands, and Indonesia pass.
- Telegram— Checks the carrier range before sending its 5-digit code. If an account already exists on a shared number, the code goes to that session, so use a private number for anything you plan to keep.
- Google— Gmail sign-up and account recovery both refuse VoIP numbers. US, UK, and German carrier-range numbers verify a new account.
- Instagram— Phone verification is required for new accounts in most regions and is retriggered on suspicious logins. Set a recovery email immediately.
- TikTok— Accepts most carrier-range countries. Region of the number affects which content and creator features the account sees.
- Discord— Phone verification is required to join servers with the highest verification level. Discord blocks numbers previously used on other accounts, so a private number works best.
- Facebook— Requests a number at sign-up and again during identity checks. A carrier-range number passes; a VoIP number usually triggers the identity-check loop.
- Tinder — Phone verification is mandatory and one number per profile. A private number avoids a “number already in use” error from previous shared-pool registrations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a virtual SMS number and a virtual phone number?
A virtual phone number is the general term for any cloud-hosted number, and some can make calls or send texts. A virtual SMS number is receive-only: it accepts incoming text messages, most often one-time verification codes, and displays them in a browser. TempNumber.me numbers are virtual SMS numbers. They do not place or receive calls and cannot send outbound SMS.
Why do Twilio and Vonage not allow receiving verification codes?
Twilio, Vonage, Plivo, and similar SMS APIs sell numbers to businesses for sending notifications and running customer support. Their acceptable use policies prohibit using rented numbers to receive OTP codes for third-party sign-ups, and their numbers come from VoIP ranges that WhatsApp, Telegram, and Google refuse. TempNumber.me exists for the use case those APIs exclude: carrier-range numbers, priced per activation, built to receive a verification SMS.
Can I use a virtual SMS number for account recovery later?
Not on a shared number. Shared numbers stay in the public pool and are used by other customers, so a recovery code sent months later would go to whoever is viewing that number. Premium private numbers are yours for the rental period only, then return to the pool. Verify the account, then add a password, recovery email, or app-based two-step verification so the account no longer depends on the number.
Which country should I choose for a virtual SMS number?
If the service does not check residency, choose by acceptance rate: United States (+1), United Kingdom (+44), Netherlands (+31), Poland (+48), and Indonesia (+62) verify most reliably on WhatsApp, Telegram, and Google. If the service expects a local number, such as Carousell in Singapore or Mercado Libre in Brazil, choose that country. All 198 countries are on the countries page with live availability.
