Temporary Phone Number for Amazon Verification

Receive the Amazon OTP on a real mobile-carrier number matched to the marketplace region — private numbers that have not been recycled through other Amazon accounts, with rental long enough to cover the login re-checks that follow.

What This Page Is For

This page covers one use case: receiving the 6-digit OTP Amazon sends by SMS when it asks you to confirm a mobile number. That prompt appears at new-account sign-up, at login from a device or IP region Amazon does not recognise, when you add a payment card or change a delivery address, and during Amazon Seller Central and Kindle Direct Publishing registration. A temporary number from TempNumber.me receives that code so your personal number is not attached to the account.

It is not about running multiple buyer accounts to reuse promotions, reopening a suspended seller account, or skipping Amazon's identity and bank checks. A phone number clears the SMS step and nothing else. Amazon is stricter than most social platforms about number reuse, and it re-sends OTPs to the number on file for as long as the account exists, so read the sections on holds and lockout before you choose a number.

Amazon Flags Reused Numbers and Holds the Account

Amazon stores the phone number as an account identifier, not a one-time gate. Its fraud system cross-references the number against every other account that has used it. A number that has passed through several sign-ups produces one of these outcomes:

  • Account on hold at sign-up— The account is created, then immediately placed on hold with a message asking you to verify your identity by uploading a government ID or confirming a card. Orders cannot be placed until it clears, and it often does not.
  • OTP never delivered— Amazon silently drops the SMS to numbers it has already blacklisted. Retrying does not help.
  • Repeated suspicious-login prompts— Existing accounts on a heavily reused number get challenged at nearly every login, because the number itself lowers the account's trust score.
  • Seller account rejected before document review— Seller Central links accounts by phone number as well as by bank details and device. A number tied to a previously suspended seller account gets the new registration refused.

This is why a shared number is a poor fit for Amazon. Shared numbers on any temp SMS service have, by definition, been used by other people for the same purpose. On Amazon the number's history follows you.

Match the Number to the Marketplace Region

Each Amazon marketplace expects a mobile number from its own region. Amazon accepts some cross-region numbers at sign-up, but a mismatch between the number's country, the delivery address, and the payment card is one of the signals that triggers a hold. Pick the country of the number to match the storefront:

  • US (+1)for Amazon.com — AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon mobile ranges. The largest marketplace and the one with the most aggressive VoIP filtering. Also the default region for Seller Central North America and KDP.
  • UK (+44)for Amazon.co.uk — EE, O2, Vodafone UK, and Three ranges starting +44 7. UK accounts are separate from EU accounts since 2021, so a UK number does not carry over to Amazon.de.
  • Germany (+49)for Amazon.de — Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone DE, and O2 Germany ranges starting +49 15, 16, or 17. Amazon.de is the largest European storefront and the entry point for the Europe unified seller account covering France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.
  • India (+91)for Amazon.in — Jio, Airtel, and Vi ranges. Amazon.in rejects non-Indian numbers at sign-up outright, and OTP login without a password is the default on the Indian app, so the number is used at nearly every session.
  • Japan (+81)for Amazon.co.jp — NTT Docomo, au, and SoftBank ranges starting +81 70, 80, or 90. Amazon.co.jp requires a Japanese number for Prime and for most third-party seller listings.

Numbers from 198 countries are available, so other marketplaces such as Amazon.ca, Amazon.com.au, Amazon.fr, and Amazon.com.br follow the same rule: use a mobile number from the storefront's country.

Shared vs Private Numbers for Amazon

TempNumber.me offers two tiers. On Amazon the difference decides whether the account survives its first week:

  • Shared numbers— Publicly listed. Other TempNumber.me users can see incoming SMS on these numbers while they are active, and the number returns to the pool shortly after. Because other users have already put Amazon accounts on it, the number arrives with a history, and Amazon reacts to that history with a hold or a dropped OTP. Acceptable for a throwaway buyer account with no card and no orders, and for nothing else.
  • Premium private numbers— Exclusively yours for the rental period. No other user sees the code, the number has not been cycled through Amazon sign-ups, and the longer rental gives you time to add authenticator-app 2FA, confirm your email, and finish Seller Central or KDP document checks while Amazon can still reach the number. This is the tier for any account that will hold orders, a seller balance, or royalty payouts. The trade-offs are covered in shared vs private numbers.

How to Verify Amazon with a Temporary Number

  1. Select the marketplace's country and a private number. Go to TempNumber.me — Amazon numbers, choose the country of the storefront you are registering on, and pick a premium private number with the longest rental available. Copy the number.
  2. Enter it in Amazon. In the Create Account form, or under Your Account, Login and Security, Mobile Phone Number, select the matching country code and type the number. Amazon offers “Text” or “Call” on some prompts; choose text, because temporary numbers do not take voice calls.
  3. Receive the OTP live.Return to TempNumber.me. The 6-digit code appears on the number's page, usually within 15-45 seconds. Enter it before the 10-minute expiry.
  4. Confirm your email in the same session. Amazon sends a verification code to the email address as well. Complete it now; an unverified email cannot be used to recover the account later.
  5. Add an authenticator app. Under Login and Security, 2-step verification, choose Authenticator App as the primary method. Amazon still keeps the phone number as the backup, but the app code is accepted at login, so a lapsed number no longer locks you out.
  6. Finish Seller Central or KDP checks while the number is live. Upload ID, bank statement, and tax forms, and attend the video verification call if requested. Amazon sends OTPs to the number during these steps, so complete them before the rental ends.

Limits You Should Know Before Verifying

A phone number clears the SMS step only. Seller Central requires a government photo ID, a bank account or credit card statement in the marketplace country, tax identity (W-9 or W-8BEN in the US, a VAT number for EU storefronts), and in most regions a live video interview before the account can list products. KDP requires bank details and a tax interview before it pays royalties. A temporary number does not shorten any of those steps.

Account lockout is the other limit. Amazon re-verifies by OTP at new-device login, on cleared cookies, on a change of IP region, and on payment edits. If the temporary number has lapsed and there is no authenticator app or verified email on file, the login cannot complete, and Amazon's recovery flow asks for a photo ID and the last card used. For any account that holds open orders, a seller balance, or royalty payouts, keep a persistent number on file or extend the private rental before it ends.

If a code does not arrive, credit review is case-by-case. Contact support@tempnumber.me with the number and the time of the attempt. TempNumber.me is not for reopening suspended seller accounts, for running multiple buyer accounts against promotion limits, or for registering on a marketplace in a country you have no address or card in. Amazon links accounts by device, card, address, and identity documents, and numbers used that way are held quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a temporary phone number for Amazon verification?

Yes, if the number sits in a real mobile-carrier range and has not already been attached to other Amazon accounts. Amazon sends a 6-digit OTP at sign-up, at unrecognised-device login, and on payment or address changes. It refuses VoIP ranges and flags reused numbers, which can put a new account on hold. TempNumber.me premium private numbers come from mobile carrier ranges and have not been cycled through repeated Amazon sign-ups.

Which country should the number be from for Amazon?

The country of the marketplace you are registering on: US (+1) for Amazon.com, UK (+44) for Amazon.co.uk, Germany (+49) for Amazon.de, India (+91) for Amazon.in, and Japan (+81) for Amazon.co.jp. A number from another region is accepted on some storefronts but raises the chance of a hold, and Amazon.in rejects non-Indian numbers at sign-up.

Does a temporary number work for Amazon Seller Central or KDP?

It clears the SMS step only. Seller Central then requires government ID, a bank statement or card in the marketplace country, tax forms, and often a video identity call. KDP requires bank and tax details before paying royalties. Both re-send OTPs to the number on file at later logins, so use a private number and add authenticator-app 2FA before it expires.

What happens if the temporary number expires and Amazon asks for an OTP?

If the number is the only second factor, the login cannot complete. Amazon prompts for an OTP at new-device login, on a new IP region, or after clearing the browser, and recovery requires the last card used and a photo ID. Before the rental ends, add an authenticator app under Login and Security, and for any account holding orders, a seller balance, or KDP royalties, keep a persistent number on file or extend the private rental.
